Quarteira is located to the west of Faro and boarders the popular Vilamoura Golf Resort. The Romans have left strong physical evidence of their own settlement close to the present town of Quarteira. After the Romans left the Algarve the villagers for several centuries maintained their existence by fishing. In 1297 the village was granted its rights by King Denis and much later in 1916 it became recognised as a civil parish. The fishing village was to grow into a small town by the advent of the vast neighbouring estate of a wealthy family becoming the Vilamoura Golf Resort with its many hotels, holiday apartments, and residential estates and sports facilities. In 1999 Quarteira was elevated to the status of a town. The town acts as a dormitory for some of the many employees of the tourist industry involved in Vilamoura.
The town has a long expanse of sandy beach and a seafront promenade. Restaurants, snack bars, cafes and bars are in profusion and offer great variety. Because of its flat terrain it is easy to walk everywhere and especially along the water front. Besides the five excellent championship golf courses in Vilamoura there is another 27-hole course at Vila Sol just to the north of Quarteira. On the same road there is the popular AquaShow Water Park with exotic birds and a small museum.
