Introduction
The name Vilamoura is the name of the original area rather than to an actual town. It is one of the largest single tourist complex in Europe and consists of over 2.000 hectares of land with a sandy beach. Its vegetation covers pine forests to open recovered salt beds. The Spanish company that owns Vilamoura is environmentally conscious and every effort is being made to protect nature within its continued planned development.

Vilamoura offers the visitor nearly every form of sport and most entertainments, and its southern border is lined by a long sandy beach on to the Atlantic Ocean. There are five different Golf Courses, a large yacht Marina, a Lawn Bowling Club, a Tennis Centre, a Sports Club, a Shooting Club, 4 Star and 5 Star Hotels, Tourist Apartments, Villas, Night Clubs, Bars, Shops and a Casino with floorshows. Within the centre of Vilamoura there is an interesting Roman village and the Museum of Cerro da Vila showing a glimpse into the past history in this area. Vilamoura was important for the production of fish paste known as garum. The Roman ruins also have the baths in which the inhabitants used to bathe.

Specifically designed for tourism Vilamoura has proved to be a very successful location for tourists of all ages due to the variety of its facilities.

Nearby Locations
Next to Vilamoura is the once upon a time small fishing village of Quarteira that is now also a holiday destination which has since the 1960s grown into a dormitory town.
