The coastline of Algarve provides the fisherman a large variety of fish to
catch out of the waters of the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Deep-sea excursions are run from different locations along the Algarve
coast. The currents and times of the year determine the possibility of a
fishermen catching Swordfish, Tuna and smaller Shark. Near Faro, a large
blue marlin in excess of 700 kilos was caught in 1983 and apparently still
the World record for this type of fish.
Many small and large man-made Dams exist inland, and there is also the
choice of small and large rivers but some suffer from severe pollution.
All "Sweet water" or "Sea" fishermen officially need a license for their
sport. These are obtained from the National Institute of Forestry and its
local offices around the country.
